Waiting for a view…..

14 Mar

There are many spectacular view points along the Gold Coast.

Most people enjoy taking in the blue sea, beautiful sunrises and great beaches.

Lately most people have been waiting for a view…..

Blue, Grey, Warm, Cold……

Rough, smooth, inviting or scary.

Some times the ocean is a mirror of the sky,

and other times a complete contrast……..

Easy come,easy go !!……

10 Mar

Weeks of drizzle, rain even near cyclonic conditions have rocked the Gold coast.

The famous beaches have taken a beating and lost thousands of tons of sand.

Yesterday the sun appeared, giving hope of a return to the normal conditions.

Alas, a storm rolled in again this morning, easy come, easy go !!….

Artificial Light……

16 Feb

After a week or so of early starts, long hours and watch beautiful coloured sunrises appear as I headed away from them to other jobs, I was eager to make an early start this morning to capture some of the Gold Coasts beautiful coastline at sunrise.
I got up too early, and found myself with no light.
At nearby Burleigh Heads, an iconic bistro had taken beating during a recent storm and I decided to see if there might be a few low light (no light??) images to capture before dawn.
Now I have shot here before, but this morning an approaching storm provided a sensational curtain to separate the glitter strip from the ocean.
Truly a great example of outdoor usage of Artificial Light….

Natural light….

10 Feb

An old friend and myself made the early morning (4.00am) trek to the beach to capture sunrise.

Well. Mother Nature was just not in the mood,

Near gale force winds, crashing waves and the air full of salt spray,

I took about 10 images before my lens and glasses had a lovely layer of salt, which did act as a very arty filter.

Pack up, coffee, home time

Here is one when there was a peek of natural light………

Return to the Beach……

9 Feb

Christmas, New Year, and then getting the kids back to school, my poor old blog has suffered.

Finally the year is starting to take on a pattern, and I can get back to some personal shooting.

Early mornings, great clouds, its great to return to the beach……

A new direction………

7 Jan

I have taken a lot of seascape lately, it has given me the chance to separate myself from portraiture and fashion, a bit of a holiday, a chance to refocus (bad pun I know).

I have had an epiphany  moment and gained new vigour in deciding, not only where I want to go photography wise, but also how to get there.

It was a little like the feeling I got when taking this shot, thinking of the setting to use, I took my eyes off the sea and suddenly got hit by a rogue wave.

The camera escaped with just a few splashes, but I got the whole lot and I realised right there why,

I was shooting in facing north, not south that when I realised I need to find a new direction…………

Moon Lit Morning…………

29 Dec

On the East coast of Australia, we take a lot of sunrise over water shots, and yes they can be quite dramatic.

Just occasionally I turn the camera west to see want is happening towards the hills.

This morning I was lucky enough to have the moon to photograph.

Rock Fishing Drenching…….

28 Dec

I have during the course of taking seascapes, been caught by the occasional rogue wave.

It usually means that I go home with drenched shoes,  jeans and lens filters covered in salt spray.

Nothing to really worry about, a quick clean of the filters and camera, hose the tripod off and cover it in WD-40, and put the shoes in the sun.

However the fisherman in this image will think about location and tides a little more before he next casts a hook.

PS he was knocked over by this wave, he got up only to be knocked over twice more…then he packed up and left!!

Coastal Colour……….

23 Dec

I have been doing a pre Christmas clean up of the desktop and the files that are lurking in random folders.

My New Years resolution list, yes list, will include launching a better file storage system.

At the moment, its a little hit and miss especially when I am searching for a requested file.

Anyway, I found this nice little seascape catalogued with a family day out to a national park 35 kms from the sea !!

Now you can see why I need a better system. if nothing else to show off the local Coastal Colour……………
