Contrast….

11 Mar

Blue, Grey, Warm, Cold……

Rough, smooth, inviting or scary.

Some times the ocean is a mirror of the sky,

and other times a complete contrast……..

The Gold Coast.. a different view…….

11 Jun

It has rained for days, lucky I was shooting in studio this weekend.

I grabbed these shoots during a break in editing Saturdays shoot…all done now.

I got laughed at by a few of the local hardcore surfers, I was tucked up under an umbrella, pressed in close to some rocks to keep the rain off the camera.

This is the second time in as many weeks I have shot from under an umbrella ( see an earlier post about shooting an outdoor fashion event “dedication or stupidity….)

Great place for a chat…………

15 May

I am not a surfer, I am not even a beginner and I kinda wish I was……………..because I love a chat.

I will chat about the weather, politics(if I want to go to sleep), food, travel and most obviously photography.

So it came as a revelation to me that all these hard-core surfers were really doing is finding a great place for a chat………….

Tranquil…………..

8 May

Strong swells have slammed onto the rocks here on the Gold Coast for the last few days, maybe due to the so-called “Super Moon” or just a passing weather system. So up the valley I went taking shots of sheds, mist, even shots of a friend taking pictures of sheds, mist…you get the idea.

We finished up at a local rock pool and just above the swimming area is a beautiful stream that is fed from the rainforest covered hinterland.

Misty Weather………..

29 Apr

………..well, the Gold Coast version of it anyway.

We have had over 4 inches of rain in the last day or so, and I think that will do.

Outdoor shoots have had to be put off and even a simple walk to the shops with my daughter saw us a arrive a little damp.

I did manage to roll out of bed at 5.00am and scout around for a location for an upcoming location shoot.

Grey skies with misty rain on and off chased me home to a nice warm coffee.

Surfing brings the crowds………

15 Feb

Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast is always popular. A beautiful beach with great surf, cafes nearby and a sub tropical headland with a jungle setting make this location a favourite regardless of the weather, but stage a surfing competition with a couple of world class pro’s and bingo, not a parking space within thirty minutes walk.

Beach Colour……….

3 Feb

I have written before about Australia’s fantastic volunteer Surf Life Savers. Whilst out for a little seascape walk this morning I noticed that the local clubs were preparing for a competition weekend.

Each club has is shade tent and with a nice sunrise they added colour to the beautiful beach at Kirra.

Waterfront property…………

25 Jan

As I have already mentioned it is storm season here on the Gold Coast, but really should we have to sell the car to buy a kayak?

The local surf beaches didn’t have their normal fantastic outlook, not only is the ocean a dirty muddy colour, but also the blue sky has been replaced by torrential curtains of rain.

We have a large creek running by the back of our place and normally it’s probably 150 metres across, today it was double that. Areas of flat land were inundated with the run off from the hinterland and it effectively turned our abode into a ritzy waterfront property. Of course when this is all soaked up the hinterlands natural beauty will be more like a work of art.

According to the weather department more is on the way……where is that scuba gear??

Warm days by the sea………

10 Jan

It’s pretty warm on the coast at the moment, so I thought this image which I took last year was kind of appropriate.

Beach and surf…

30 Dec

Yep, it’s so easy to just get up and sit by the water’s edge anywhere along the Gold Coasts many beaches and headlands and find something to photograph. At the moments most models are partying fairly hard and the thought of getting out of bed for make up and hair at about 3.00am just doesn’t excite them, so to keep in practice I am shooting everything, and using all the lenses and bodies I have. Sort of moving away from my comfort zone, even when it comes to processing techniques, …always learning something new.

The trouble with stretching yourself is that you discover short comings, both in knowledge and GEAR.

I quite like finding out that I need to learn more about something I thought I was on top off. Learning is easy when its your passion, and time just flies by reading articles on techniques, what I don’t like so much is realising that to step up to the next level further financial investment is required. I need studio lights..now, and I what I want to do with them is take at least one outdoors on location powered by a battery pack . Oh dear, not cheap but the flexibility provided by having so much light will help me produce a greater range of images. Strobist with speedlights is great, and I enjoy the simplicity of this setup, but!

Anyway the surf was lower today but the usual crowd were out in force.
