Rain,rain, go away……

22 Feb

Queenslands Gold Coast hasn’t lived up to its name for a few weeks now.

Rain, high winds and pounding seas have left the sunny playground sodden and littered with leaves and branches.

But you know, it won’t be long before we will be out admiring the hinterlands waterfalls and playing at the beach.

Here is a shoot taken on another rainy day with the beautiful Dani Bonner.Dani in the Rain

Artificial Light……

16 Feb

After a week or so of early starts, long hours and watch beautiful coloured sunrises appear as I headed away from them to other jobs, I was eager to make an early start this morning to capture some of the Gold Coasts beautiful coastline at sunrise.
I got up too early, and found myself with no light.
At nearby Burleigh Heads, an iconic bistro had taken beating during a recent storm and I decided to see if there might be a few low light (no light??) images to capture before dawn.
Now I have shot here before, but this morning an approaching storm provided a sensational curtain to separate the glitter strip from the ocean.
Truly a great example of outdoor usage of Artificial Light….

Coastal lights……………

8 Oct

When you live in a surfing, swimming playground, such as the Gold Coast, the expected image to be capturing would be sunny beaches, surf shoots etc however there is another side to the coast. The early morning or late evening vistas that display mood and  detail that are masked during times of full sun.

Looking south along the coast, there is a stunning avenue of Coastal lights………………..

Behind the scenes…a new frontier !

14 Jun

Behind the scenes images or video is now sometimes more awaited than the actual shoot.

At fashion shows, I have had designers say “come back stage, I really want some candid black and whites” this is kinda strange considering they put so much effort into displaying the colour and vibrance of their garments.

Clients also enjoy some bts imagery from their shoots and recently instead of my wife taking on this role the awesome make up artist, Keeora stepped in.

Now we were in a dark studio and low light photography can be a challenge at best, so some of the images are best described as “arty”, but others have worked well and I got a kick out of looking at them.

Photography by Keeora Stephenson, Brilliant MUA/Stylist and budding photographer.

Cooly Rocks..some of the sights !

13 Jun

Due to the rain and other shoots during the Cooly Rocks Festival, I only got there for an hour or so on a very wet and cold aftrenoon.

However these two shots give an idea about the diversity of style and the tongue in cheek nature of these Rock and Roll, car loving, dance enthusiasts.

More studio fitness………………

Just a couple more from an earlier post

being able to stand back and change the light is the benefit of being in a studio

this shoot was great fun and a new style for me…………………….

Another one from a studio shoot…………..

Chaise lounge……..

11 Jun

Every house should have one, comfortable, stylish and great for photography.

Those of you that watch television will see examples of this classic style in every period movie and show.

We have one at home ready for the day that i can justify the expense of a studio.

I shot this image of Vashte whilst using the studio of Nicola Parsons Photography.

Its all about the eyes………

16 Mar

People who know me probably get sick of me rambling on about the most important ingredient in a portrait.

With all due respect to the make up artists ( who by the way, are indeed artists), and the hair stylists, and even the fashion stylists, if you don’t capture the subjects eyes then the portrait will never attain the impact you desire.

Obviously some models aside from being blessed with great body genes also were handed dramatic, scene stealing eyes, but not all were so lucky.

So then the photographer steps in, good lighting, great connection with the subject and an understanding of composition will still allow you to capture an image which draws the viewer in.

Beauty……………

One of my favourite models, Ali. Not a classic beauty, nor someone that stops traffic, but she just has something which makes her stand out.

Just another example of the inner being showing thru…………
