Tranquil…………..

8 May

Strong swells have slammed onto the rocks here on the Gold Coast for the last few days, maybe due to the so-called “Super Moon” or just a passing weather system. So up the valley I went taking shots of sheds, mist, even shots of a friend taking pictures of sheds, mist…you get the idea.

We finished up at a local rock pool and just above the swimming area is a beautiful stream that is fed from the rainforest covered hinterland.

Creeks and streams……….

Water is spilling out of the hinterland where-ever you look.

there are small streams,

there are running creeks,

and fast filling billabongs.

Hinterland Beauty………..

26 Jan

With all the rain we have had the Gold Coasts normally beautiful hinterland has raised the bar in the beauty stakes a bit higher. Normally sedate creeks are now raging torrents and trickles over rocks are now waterfalls.

Higher up the valleys, the mist hangs over the limestone escarpments almost till midday and provides a magnificent scene of country life albeit 10 minutes to the beach.

Our Life Savers………..

26 Jan

It’s the Australia Day Public holiday here in Australia. That usually means a sleep in, a trip to the park with the kids or a BBQ with family and friends for most people. For us photographers, an early morning fashion photo shoot or some landscape work capturing the beautiful sunrise light.

Lots of people here on the Gold Coast we have days of rain meaning most people stayed indoors, but this morning the beaches were littered with debris from the storms and every man, woman and dog were out getting so much-needed fresh air.

I spoke briefly about waterfront properties last post, well I think this position is even more spectacular.

Back to the point of the post, while the rest of us relax on our national holiday, spare a thought for the groups of volunteers that continue to watch over us while we play. This Surf Life Saving boat was out at about 6.00am for a training run, with  messy seas, light rain and fog to contend with these great Australians were still honing their skills. Thank you for all your efforts, it is appreciated.

Waterfront property…………

25 Jan

As I have already mentioned it is storm season here on the Gold Coast, but really should we have to sell the car to buy a kayak?

The local surf beaches didn’t have their normal fantastic outlook, not only is the ocean a dirty muddy colour, but also the blue sky has been replaced by torrential curtains of rain.

We have a large creek running by the back of our place and normally it’s probably 150 metres across, today it was double that. Areas of flat land were inundated with the run off from the hinterland and it effectively turned our abode into a ritzy waterfront property. Of course when this is all soaked up the hinterlands natural beauty will be more like a work of art.

According to the weather department more is on the way……where is that scuba gear??

The road to nowhere…………….

24 Jan

In the valley that heads up into the hinterland away from the coast from where we live there is this bridge. Everytime I approach it I think to myself the bridge to nowhere or the bridge to adventure. Ying and  Yang !!!

Right outside my door……

4 Jan

A large meal after a swim with the family at the local creek meant that I needed to walk off that full feeling before bed. Naturally being a photographic tragic, I grabbed the Nikon D5000 and went towards the creek. Now for those unfortunate enough not to live on the beautiful Gold Coast, you need to realise that the sun sets behind hills that form a rainforest backdrop for the golden beaches, meaning that unless you can gain reasonable elevation you just have a glow on the hilly horizon.

The creek of course is just above sea level so I needed to look for something else to shoot. Man made structure aren’t really my favourite genre, but now and again, an image just presents itself and is different or quirky enough to be captured.

The rest of the week is booked to model portfolios and maybe some product work so this might be my only opportunity to have a bit of a play.

Of course, it would be remiss of me to not remind non-Gold Coasters of want they are missing.

Iconic Australian Landscapes……..

17 Oct

So, the make up artist is booked, costumes are organised and the locations checked for sun position etc and the model get sick!. Too late to cast a new model, and besides the poor girl can’t help being ill and she is perfect for the concept. The dilemma I face is that I now have an intense need to make some pictures. The sun is shining and my first thought is go to the beach, get some photojournalistic stuff, there is always something happening. But by chance the traffic is already heavy in that direction so I head into the Gold Coasts stunning and under publicised hinterland. This the world of “Terra Nova”(www.fox.com/terranova/), cycads and dinosaur type landscape, creeks and waterfalls at every twist in the road. This is so far removed from the bright lights and bikinis of Surfer Paradise and yet it is only 20 minutes drive. As I drive further up one of the valleys there large rocky outcrops and sheer escarpments on both sides, and I can only wonder what sort of landscape photographers nirvana lies hidden behind the vines and ferns. I’m not alone on this twisty road, a peloton of middle-aged lycra clad cyclists have found this peaceful and scenic route ideal for their sunday jaunt and no doubt will stop at a peaceful and charming coffee shop to get their fill of Lattes and scones before riding home. Armed only with my Nikon D5000 and the terrific, versatile 18-200 DX VR, I shoot some of the landscape, more than anything to add to the location file for later shoots. The road eventually becomes a track and then nothing and I am forced to turn around, however when I get out the car to shoot the following scene, my senses’ are assaulted by the smells of steamy and humid tropical rainforest, fetid yet incredibly clean aromas that are such a contrast to the smells of the Pacific ocean only twenty minutes away. On your next holiday or outing to the Gold Coast do the ‘worlds’, Cavill Mall and Surfers but also spend some time up in the hinterland, you wont regret it.This image was converted to “Water Colour” in Photoshop and is available for sale in various sizes printed on canvas.
