Emily in a garden……….nothing more need be said !!

Excitement everywhere…………..

8 Jun

One of the things I enjoy about fashion shows is the level of excitement that is evident amongst the participants.

The organisers and designers are nervous, the make up artists are hurrying around, always smiling with that “nothing is too hard” attitude..

…and the models are smiling, chatting and laughing.

They are so excited they still laugh at my old jokes………

Strutting in the rain…………..

7 Jun

Real professionals can turn the worst situations into unique and memorable occasions that people talk about for ages.

Like the models at the local outdoor fashion event when a storm roared up the coast and dumped all its rain on the runway.

Dedication or stupidity?………………..

5 Jun

At the outdoor fashion show, Fashion on James(see more at http://www.facebook.com/andrewplacephotographyQld ) that I have blooged about, the weather was always going to be an issue.

A blast of winter had zoomed up the coast from colder climates and was drenching the whole region.

Backup plans were in place but they would be no where near as effective exposure for the streets traders, so with the little amount of sunshine that was around the show pressed on outdoors.

It was gret until the last half hour when the heavens opened.

The designer taht was still left to showcase her wares and the models got together and decided to push on, as the only two professional photographers present and with me covering for Fashion TV Australia ( http://www.facebook.com/fashionTVaustralia ) Joel Stafford and myself enlisted to willing mobile umbrella stands and kept shooting.

I got drenched but the Nikon stayed dry………………….

Captured Beauty………….

4 Jun

When you get the images from a fashion show up on your Mac (you do use a Mac, don’t you?) there is a parade (sorry, pun intended) of similar images to process, and that is okay, after all they are a showcase for designers collections.

These parades are of course populated by beautiful, stylish models with fantastic make up and hair.

As the photographer, you are there to capture the garment or whatever is being displayed.

I have to say, I struggle to stay focussed and my lens quite often strays to outstanding beauty.

The amazing artists…………

3 Jun

Make up artists are the least thanked and understood component of the fashion industry.

The designers have their name up in lights, the photographers get rave reviews ( the good ones anyway) but the poor make artists are generally left with a table of half used product and a sore back.

The canvas they work on can be oily, bumpy and sometimes even scaley.

The canvas moves, it gets grumpy, it takes phone calls during the painting and can occasionally sneeze on you, nice!

Despite all this, these incredibly talented artists continue to smile, work in tight rooms with poor lighting, have photographers dazzle them with flashes (sorry) and turn out the most stunning mobile art.

VIBA….OMG an award…………..

18 May

Yes folks, its been passed along from Jenn at Quirk’n it. Now she really deserved an award, a talented photographer and fitness guru, Jen has a talent for showing life from different angles.

Now the rules state I must share seven little known facts about my life…….apparently I can use ageing memory banks as a way out of this, oh well here goes.

1. I have moved house over thirty times in 49 years…..I guess the police will catch up with me sooner or later.

2. I went from being an explosives worker (powder monkey) to being a paramedic….there has to be something freudian in that!!

3. I have shared a thermal updraft whilst flying a glider with the worlds crankiest, moth-eaten, grumpy eagle who proceeded to attack the glider until I left him to that piece of sky.

4. I love Asian food above all others and the perfect dinner would have dishes from Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and India washed down with a chilled New Zealand Chablis overlooking the ocean……………

5. I have all the James Bond movies and try as hard as I can, I just haven’t managed to be a suave as Shaun Connery  ( I am not quite as bald though)

6. People who know me well, are amazed that I have a website and blog as they realise just how IT challenged I really am, thank goodness for youtube tutorials.

7. Photography is a passion, but my Family are my life, to see them enjoy and succeed in life means more than anything…except perhaps the thought of fact number 4., just kidding !!

Now for the easy part, passing this prestigious award along to people with real talent…

1. Los Angeles Fashion Glamour & Lifestyle Photographer – the average Jim – talented and inspiring photographer with a honest and worldly opinion about photography and life in general.

2. Complete [and Utter] Disbelief – beauty and lifestyle from South Africa

3. Alexandra’s Art. – Beauty, I don’t need to say anything else

4. Bethylicious – Seriously talented writer and photographer with a great sense of fun.

5. Iain Crockart/Photographer/Bits and Blogs – Travels to far flung places, great camera work, it makes me green with envy.

Detail………..

25 Feb

With the plethora of fashion events occurring to hail new seasons collections worldwide, every now and again a designer stands out with the attention and application of detail on their garments. One such design label is Damsel in this Dress, showcased recently in Queensland.

Hair and Make Up………

20 Feb

When I get contacted by models to do portfolio work, one of my first questions is, “do you have a hair and make up artist arranged ?”, invariably they say “no, I like the natural look”.

What this translates to is they can’t afford one or they don’t realise the importance of these talented people

You don’t have to go to fashion show levels of creativity to achieve a fantastic result. Most models benefit from even a light make over by a Make Up Artist.

These girls are getting the full treatment for a parade during the Gold Coast Fashion Week.

Runway Smiles…………

20 Feb

New York, London and the Gold Coast are all experiencing fashion fever. Runways are adorned with colour and motion, models walking the walk and photographers lighting the rooms with their flash guns.

One thing we don’t see very often is a smile.

Some shows are very serious, but thankfully here on the Gold Coast during the swimwear parades the girls cut loose a bit and added some fun to the parade.

There was cheeky,

there was happy,

there was saucy,

and plain old lovely.

Thanks girls for adding some fun to an already great show.
